Teacher receives 'This Girl Can' Service to Sport Award

Congratulations to maths teacher and Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator Amanda Kirby for achieving third place in the 'This Girl Can in Herts' Award. The award was given in recognition of the work that Amanda and fellow volunteer Karen Silverton performed in setting up a girls' football team at Chipperfield Corinthians Club. The award was presented on Tuesday 19th November at the sixteenth annual Hertfordshire Service to Sport Awards, which took place at a packed Weston Auditorium, University of Hertfordshire. The ceremony celebrated the dedication and selfless efforts of sports volunteers from across the county. Amanda and Karen built the girls’ team from the ground up two seasons ago and it was the first all-female team in the club’s one hundred and four year history. Both Amanda and Karen have both gained their level 1 FA coaching qualifications, and now Under 8, Under 9 and Under 12 teams have also been established.

In advance of the ceremony, a panel of independent judges considered more than 130 nominations from clubs and individuals, and awards were made to over 50 volunteers in recognition of their massive contribution to sport in Hertfordshire.

Amanda said she was thrilled to be nominated for the award and said it was an award for the club as a whole. She said "It was lovely to be nominated and recognised for the work we have done for our daughters and their friends. Over the past three years we have gone from only two girls at the club playing with the boys’ teams to three strong all- female teams".

The club is currently looking for more Under 9 girls to play and is also planning to set up an Under 10/11 girls' team.
